To further infuriate Iran, the government appointed the first female provincial governor in the country's history. Habibe Sarobi, is now governor of Bamiyan province. Both she, and most of the people in the province, are Hazara. These are an east Asian people, an after-effect of the medieval conquest of Afghanistan by Mongol armies. The Hazara are generally disliked by other Afghans, all descendents of victims of the Mongol armies. Memories are long in this part of the world.
