Taliban announced that they had killed a police commander, and seven other policemen, they had captured in southern Afghanistan last year. The killings were ordered "by religious leaders."

In eastern Afghanistan, police captured three armed Pakistanis who were apparently trying to assassinate the American ambassador. Intelligence officials detected the plot, and went after those known to be involved.
