Fourteen Taliban commanders accepted the governments amnesty offer and surrendered. The men are followers of warlord Jalaludin Haqani, a former Taliban government minister and al Qaeda members. Haqani has a $6 million price on his head for his al Qaeda activities.

The Taliban say they are holding the fourth member of a US Navy SEAL team that was caught by a larger enemy force on June 28th. The Taliban say they will execute the American commando.

In eastern Afghanistan, Taliban attacked a U.S. Army medical team that was providing care for villagers. The attackers were driven off with no friendly casualties. The Taliban see such aid as harmful to their cause, and seek to terrorize  Afghans into staying away from such foreign aid efforts.
