Police and army anti-rebel operations are having an effect, with a sharp decline in rebel activity. In the last few months, several of the rebel leaders have been captured or killed. Algerians in general are fed up with the Moslem radicals and have been increasingly cooperative with the police (providing information.) There are only a few hundred hard core rebels left, who continue to massacre civilians.
