Greece has completed a new strategic review, studying the future through 2015. Turkey is regarded as the single greatest threat. The review focuses on four issues:
@ new "smart" weapons are needed to remain effective in modern combat.
@ the military is to continue to move to a volunteer force. The number of conscripts will be reduced, and their service will be cut to 12 months for the Army (14 for the Air Force and 15 for the Navy). A total of 15,000 new long-service contract volunteers will be recruited over the next three
years.
@ cooperation and interoperability between Greece's Army, Navy, and Air Force must be improved.
@ steps must be taken to deal with future asymmetrical threats Current defense spending of 4.96% of the gross domestic product will be cut to 4%.--Stephen V Cole
