On July 11 the Moldovan government asked that the European Union play a more active role in the search of a peaceful solution to the Transdniester conflict." The current deadline for Russian withdrawal from the Transdniester region is December 2003. Moldova is looking for outside political support to insure the withdrawal occurs. Originally, Russia was to withdraw by December 31, 2003. On July 23 Romania said it would welcome EU participation in a peacekeeping force from Transdniester. Romania regards a solution to Moldovas problem as a major political objective
