Balkans: Greek Leftist Lunatics On The Loose Again

Archives

January20, 2007: Bosnian police continue investigations into possible Islamic radicals. As a European and Moslem country, Bosnia is expected to tolerate a wide range of Islamic beliefs. But the Islamic radicals have been caught planning terrorist operations, and the government has decided that it's better to crack down on this sort of thing early and often.

January 16, 2007: Greek military received the first of its new batch of AH64 Apache "Longbow" attack helicopters. Greece will acquire 12 of the AH64DHA model helicopters.

January 13, 2007: The Kosovo government is playing the "Serb domestic card." Kosovo's prime minister is urging ethnic Albanians living in south Serbia to vote in the upcoming Serbian elections scheduled for January 21. The pitch is that ethnic Albanians must use "all democratic means" to improve their political situation.

January 12, 2007: Greek terrorists fired an RPG-7 at the US embassy in Athens. A group called "Revolutionary Struggle" claimed responsibility for the attack. The Greek government said that the organization is a left wing faction. The rocket-propelled grenade slammed into a third-floor bathroom. No one was hurt. Every time something like this happens the Greek government thinks of " November 17", the terrorist-anarchist gang that launched attacks throughout Greece but often targeted American targets. Greek police and intelligence services made a concerted effort to destroy the " November 17" gang prior to the 2004 Olympics.

January 11, 2007: A senior member of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) said that Serbia should not "recognize Kosovo as independent." The SRS is currently ahead in pre-election polls but few analysts think the SRS can win a governing majority.

The US government said that Kosovo's "final status" should be decided later in 2007 "ie, several months after the upcoming Serbian election. It seems the US supports a "cooling off" period in Serbia and believes a "quick decision" (particularly one favoring Kosovar independence) might "backfire" in Serbia.

January 10, 2007: A Bosnian politicians claimed that if Kosovo becomes independent, a substantial number of Kosovar Serbs would move into eastern Bosnia, specifically into the Republika Srpska territory. This claim may be unsubstantiated as policy, but no doubt resettlement is being considered.

Bosnia sentenced three men convicted of plotting suicide terror attacks in Europe. One of the attacks was supposed to take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia. One of the three men was identified as a "Serbian-born Swede." On was a Bosnian and the other a Turkish citizen "living in Denmark." The men were arrested in October 2005.
