Kazakhstan is trying to walk a diplomatic tightrope between Russia, China, and the Islamic world, all of which want access to its extensive oil reserves. While trying to maintain friendly relations with Russia, it has signed an agreement to construct on oil pipeline linking its oilfields to China. Kazakhstan signed a military cooperation agreement with the US on 1 Dec, bringing another player into the arena. --Stephen V Cole
