Local Uzbeks claim that there are some 2,000 American troops now operating out of  the old Soviet base of Khanabad (near the Afghan border.) The base has an air strip and C-130 transports fly in more troops and supplies daily. Moreover, transport helicopters, sometimes escorted by a helicopters gunship, fly off to the south each night, returning three hours later.
