Taiwan is pressing the US to let it buy P-3C Orion maritime (anti-submarine) patrol planes. The Clinton Administration deferred a decision on the sale a year ago. Taiwan now uses 26 ancient S-2T Tracker anti-submarine planes, which are short-ranged and have antiquated sensors unable to deal with the latest Chinese submarines. Taiwan has hinted that it would take the Dutch Fokker Enforcer or the French Atlantique, but these are inferior to the Orion.--Stephen V Cole
