Colombia had some 2,945 kidnappings  in 1999, the most of any nation in the world. In 1998 the total was 2,216. Half the kidnappings are by leftist rebel groups (mainly FARC), the rest by criminal gangs. About four percent of the abductions are by right wing groups.
