The ELN kidnapped a Catholic bishop, two priests and a local mayor in the northeast. Normally, the leftist rebels leave the clergy alone, for the Catholic church has long served as a conduit for communication between the rebels and the government. However, in the last twenty years, over fifty members of the clergy have died from rebel violence, another 17 kidnapped and some sixty churches or church buildings destroyed.
