UN peacekeepers are going out in force to guard workers clearing debris from streets in slum areas. The gangs that use those slums as bases, fire a few shots, but the UN peacekeepers fire back and the gangsters, usually pro-Aristide men, pull back. Meanwhile, better organized groups of armed former soldiers continue to move about the country, and into large towns and cities where pro-Aristide groups predominate.
