UN peacekeepers have tried to work out arrangements with pro-Aristide groups to avoid violence. This often involved keeping the police (who are largely anti-Aristide) away from political rallies. The police object to this, but so far, there have been no battles between police and peacekeepers. Battles with pro-Aristide gangs still occur, and in the last six months such violence has left over 400 dead (mostly Aristide supporters, and at least 24 cops.)
