India-Pakistan: January 6, 2000

Archives

India has identified the five hijackers of the Indian Airlines aircraft. The five are all Pakistanis (Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid  Akhtar Sayeed, Sunni Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim and Shaqir). The ID was obtained via four Kashmiri separatists captured recently who are said to be part of the support team for the hijackers. The captured men are members of Harkat-ul-Ansar, a Kashmiri separatist organization that  is on a U.S. list of terrorist organizations. Pakistan says the hijackers were Indians and the entire incident was a set up to make Pakistan look bad. Along those lines, Pakistan claims that it has captured two Indian trained terrorists responsible for a marketplace bombing in Pakistan on January 5th.
