India has offered to evacuate the 37,000 Sri Lankan troops from the Jaffna peninsula of the Sri Lankan government requests it. Such an evacuation would be a major defeat for the Sri Lankan army, and India would do it only if both sides observed a ceasefire. India does not want to get involved fighting in Sri Lanka. In 1987, India did send troops to Sri Lanka to police a peace agreement. But the LTTE began fighting again and some 1,200 Indian soldiers died before the Indians withdrew in 1990.
