In Kashmir, several violent incidents left three rebels, two soldiers and a civilian dead. The rebels and political parties had called for a general strike in the region (to protest Indian violence) and it was generally obeyed. The new chief of the Indian has called for a political solution in Kashmir, saying that a military solution was unlikely. While this attitude demonstrates common sense, it will be hard to convince Indian nationalists and their political leaders.
