Pakistan is having problems with its Al Khalid tank. Designed with Chinese help, the Al Khalid has been under development for a decade. The problem is the engine; four test engines have been less than successful because of dust ingestion. Ukraine is now trying to market its 1200hp 6TD2 and 1500hp 6TD3 diesels. Because of the delay in the Al Khalid, Pakistan has purchased 320 T-80UD tanks with 125mm cannons from Ukraine. These use the smaller 1000hp 6TD1 engine.--Stephen V Cole
