Pakistani's president Musharraf sits on a shaky throne. He has changed the government so that the military have a veto power over government actions. Pakistan's parliament is dominated by wealthy families and ethnic and religious partisans. There is much lip service paid to "the national good," but family and faction come first, at the country's expense. Musharraf wants to change all this, creating a secular democracy like Turkey. He has few allies, and his enemies are willing to use force to halt such a plan. Musharraf has increased his personal security over the last few months.
