India-Pakistan: September 13, 2003

Archives

India is considering purchasing refurbished American P-3 naval reconnaissance aircraft. At present, the Indian navy relies on a few ageing Russian aircraft for this duty. The US has cut back its force of active duty P-3s since the end of the Cold War (and the demise of the huge Soviet fleet) and has good deals on used P-3s. The US is trying to improve relations with India. But many in India still see the US as something of an imperialist power that supports archenemy Pakistan for no other reason than to keep India weak and "in its place." It's hard to overcome this Cold War era thinking, although over time paranoid delusions like this do slowly fade.
