In Jharkhand, India, police fought Maoist rebels, killed at least five of them and seized a large supply of weapons and ammunition. Government attempts to negotiate with the various Maoist rebel groups has largely failed. The peace effort just encouraged the Maoists to step up their terrorist operations.
