Pakistan passed laws forcing madrassas, or (Islamic schools), to provide non-religious instruction as well. While the madrassas educate some 1.7 million children, the 25 million kids going to the public schools are also exposed to extremist Islamic education. This was a carryover from the late 1970s, when the military dictatorship of the time got behind Islamic radicalism, and changed textbooks to reflect that outlook. The textbooks are now being modified, but they still push a twisted, pro-Islam, line, and much hatred of India.
