American and British warplanes, after being fired on, hit air defense facilities in  northern Iraq. In the Gulf, US and allied warships stopped 21 small ships trying to smuggle oil from Iraq. Iran has cracked down on smuggling with larger ships, so the effort has switched to smaller ships that must move in international waters, where they can be caught by warships enforcing the embargo.
