There have been increased sightings of American Special Forces in northern Iraq. The U.S. troops are apparently working with local Kurdish officials to prepare for an invasion of Iraq. Most of Iraq's armed forces are stationed in northern Iraq, south of the Kurdish area and north of Baghdad.

U.S. and British warplanes bombed Iraqi air defense targets in southern Iraq.
