Israel: March 16, 2005

Israel and Palestinian Authority negotiators have spent weeks working out the details of Israeli withdrawal from West Bank towns. Israel pulled out of Jericho today. Most of the arguments have to do with security. Israel wants to maintain tight controls, especially lots of check points. Palestinians want more freedom of movement, which Israel knows terrorists can use to make attacks. The Palestinian terrorist groups have not yet agreed to the truce. In any event, the Palestinian terrorists only see the truce, or ceasefire, as a way to rebuild their organization, before resuming attacks on Israel. Palestinian media still stress terrorism against Israel and the eventual destruction of Israel.

In Lebanon, Syrian intelligence and military forces have moved to the Bekaa valley of eastern Lebanon. While out of the coastal cities, where most Lebanese live, thousands of Syrian troops are still in Lebanon.
