The investigation into the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al Hariri has led to the arrest of four army generals. All of the suspects are considered pro-Syrian, and ran the security forces, in cooperation with occupying Syrian forces, before the Syrians were run out of the country recently. It was long believed that the killing of al Hariri (last February), and other terrorist attacks, were carried out by pro-Syrian groups. Public outcry over the Hariri death forced Syrian forces from the country, but many pro-Syrian politicians remain in power. It is believed that the pro-Syrian faction wants to maintain good relations with Syria, mainly because of business dealings (many of them illegal) established between the pro-Syrian factions in Lebanon, and officials in Syria.
