Kurdish War: February 6, 2002

Turkish press sources report that a major pro-PKK newspaper says that the PKK intends to transform itself democratically from a guerrilla organization and become a legal political party. The story reflected a decision by the PKKs ruling council. The PKK Party would still be dedicated to fighting for Kurdish causes and Kurdish rights. However, the reports said the article assured its readers that the New PKK would pick up arms again if Turkey failed to insure Kurdish cultural freedom. One has to wonder if the PKK councils decision to transform the organization is in part a response to the USs War on Terror. The US and Turkey have declared the PKK to be a terrorist organization. It is also banned in parts of Europe. The PKK has been particularly active in Germany, and has a number of supporters in Belgium.
