Turkish sources report that on January 16 Turk security forces engaged PKK guerrillas in a heavy firefight near Diyarbakir. Twelve PKK rebels died in the clash that continued into January 17 (which suggests this may have been a running gunfight). One Turkish soldier was killed and five wounded.
