Nigeria announced it has spent some eight billion dollars on its Liberian peacekeeping operation. Over 500 Nigerian soldiers were killed and many more injured. Some 12,000 Nigerian troops served in Liberia from 1990 to 1997. After that, some went home and others were sent to Sierra Leone. A few remained in Liberia.

October 23; The last Nigerian peacekeeping troops left Liberia.

October 19; The government publicly destroyed some 15,000 weapons turned in by various rebel factions after the recent civil war ended.

October 11; The border with Sierra Leone was reopened, after being closed due to fighting by Sierra Leone rebels in the area. Liberia has agreed to stop providing sanctuary for the rebels.
