LURD rebels, forced back to their bases or into nearby Guinea, have counterattacked. Army troops some hundred kilometers from the capital.  The government, deprived of much of its revenue from the illegal diamond trade, has not been able to pay most of the army. Many of the troops have turned to banditry, and several hundred went to neighboring Ivory Coast to loot and pillage during the civil war there.
