Liberia: April 8, 2003

Some 350 Liberians, from the army and LURD, have crossed the border into Sierra Leone and asked to be allowed to sit out the violence in their country. Sierra Leone insists on confining the men to camps in return for refuge, but many of the military refugees are not keen on that kind of treatment. But since these men had to surrender their weapons when they crossed the border, there has not been a lot of trouble yet.

A new rebel group has been heard from; MODEL (Movement for Democracy in Liberia). The fighters are from the Krahn tribe and are paid and led by Charyee Doe, the younger  brother of the former (and deceased) president Samuel Doe. This group is thought to have only a few hundred (at most) armed men.
