LURD rebels now control 60 percent of the country, including most of the valuable diamond mining areas. This denies the government a major source of revenue, which will now be taken over by the rebels. The UN continues to maintain an arms embargo on Liberia, as well as a ban on diamond exports. Weapons still enter the country illegally, at higher cost. The illegal diamond trade continues as well, with the sellers getting less money to deal with the additional hassle of the UN ban.
