UN peacekeepers are trying to arrange, with neighboring nations, increased attention to the illegal arms trade with people inside Liberia. Cold War surplus AK-47s, and other weapons, are still abundant and cheap. It also appears that rebel groups in Liberia and neighboring nations, are planning to shift stockpiles of weapons across borders in order to legally conform with peace deals. For example, the Sierra Leone LURD rebels (which were backed by Guinea) are disarming by selling to storing weapons outside the country, including Liberia. Ivory Coast rebels, supported by Liberian rebel group MODEL are also moving weapons back and forth across the border.
