The extent of the corruption that has ruined the nations economy and corrupted public life can be seen in the continuing negotiations with the family of the late dictator Sani Abacha. From 1993 to 1998 general Abacha ran, and plundered the nation. His rule ended when he dropped dead. It was estimated that Abacha stole up to four billion dollars, and allowed others to steal much more. Negotiations with his family have so far resulted in the return of nearly a billion dollars. A deal is in the works whereby the family would get a pardon (and be able to keep whatever stolen money they have left) after they return another $1.2 billion. It is thought that the family would have about $300 million left. Some of the returned money has again been stolen by corrupt officials (which never seem to be in short supply.)
