A deal has been reached with the family of former dictator Sani Abacha whereby the family will stand aside and allow $1.1 billion to be returned to the government. The government will allow another $100 million (stolen by Abacha before he became head of government) to be released by foreign banks to the family. Other senior government officials stole at least $3 billion in the last ten years. Graft and corruption absorbed most of Nigeria's oil income over the last few decades.
