After five days of fighting, police have put down a rebellion by Islamic radicals in the north. Two police and at least six of the 200 Islamic radicals were killed. Several of the Islamic radicals were arrested and it appears that they belong to an Islamic radical group composed largely of college students. The group, calling themselves the Muhajirun, based their activities on the Taliban of Afghanistan. Most Nigerian Moslems are not keen on radical Islam. The wide popularity of Islamic (Sharia) law in northern Nigeria was as a possible solution to the crime and corruption that has crippled Nigeria for decades. Faced with this reaction, groups of more determined Nigerian Moslems are organizing and arming so that they can impose Sharia by force.
