The Niger government said it's troops and Revolutionary Armed Forces of the Sahara (FARS) rebels from the Toubou tribe. The Toubou leader was also killed and 12 tribesmen (out of hundreds involved) captured. Despite a 1997 peace agreement, many FARS rebels have refused to disarm. The gun battle lasted 12 hours and occurred on September 12.
