After a year of combat in Chechnya, the Russians say they have killed 14,000 rebels while losing 2,300 of their own troops. The number of rebels has varied, at least according to Russian statements. Last Summer, only 5,000 rebels were said to be facing invading Russian troops. Since then, that number has been revised to 17,000 and 26,000. Meanwhile, a senior Chechen official in the Russian appointed government of Chechnya was killed by a car bomb. The rebels have announced that they will kill all such "collaborators."
