A senior army officer, commenting anonymously in a newspaper article, admitted that the army downplayed actual losses in Chechnya. Civilian groups (especially relatives of dead soldiers) say that the actual losses are three times what is officially announced. This would put the Russian dead in the 27 month war at some 10,000 soldiers and police.
