Some 93,000 officers of the armed forces are "homeless" (do not have government supplied housing, a long Russian tradition.) These officers must double up with friends or family. A year ago, 97,000 were homeless. Of the 1.2 million men in the armed forces, 40 percent are officers or warrant officers (by Western standards, senior NCOs or technical specialists.) In Chechnya, the rebels have welcomed the deployment of US military trainers to Georgia. The Chechen rebels do not want to be associated with al Qaeda and the American operations will help the Georgians to get al Qaeda out of Georgia. In Chechnya, rebels killed two civilians while the army arrested 70 men suspected of working with the rebels.
