Russia has begun dismantling 16 of it's first generation nuclear subs. The decommissioned boats had been rusting at anchor for over a decade. So far, Russia has decommissioned 190 nuclear subs, but only gotten the nuclear fuel out of 97 of them. Even with the nuclear fuel removed, the nuclear power plant is still highly radioactive and the sub needs to be taken apart and the radioactive scrap stored safely.
