Political and financial pressure from Israel caused the government to cancel a deal to sell SA-18 portable surface to air missiles (similar to the US Stinger.) Israel feared that Syria would pass the SA-18s on to Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah is constantly attacking Israeli ground troops and aircraft.
