A third day of fighting scattered thousands of people seeking safety. The government claimed that 12 FDD rebels were killed and four soldiers wounded in the latest round. Most of the chaos has been in Makamba province, 200km southeast of Bujumbura. Government forces fought FDD rebels following a rebel ambush of a bus on the 15th, after which 15 passengers were taken captive. On the night of the 15th, an unidentified group of armed men burst into the bar where political opposition party leader Gerard Buryo was and gunned him down. Between 1993 and 1995, nearly 30 Burundian parliamentarians were killed under questionable circumstances. - Adam Geibel
