Vice president John Garang died in an airplane crash, on July 30th, while returning from a visit to Uganda. The crash site was found today, on a mountain side on the border. Garang was in Uganda discussing cooperation with Uganda to eliminate the LRA rebels, and deal with bandits who crossed the border. He was flying in a helicopter belonging to Uganda. Garang has been a Sudanese vice-president since July 9th, as part of the Sudanese peace deal with the southern rebels. Garang has been the principal leader of the southern rebels, and was key to keeping various rebel factions fighting each other. It is feared that the peace deal with the southern rebels will fall apart with Garang now gone.
