Despite the Moslem insurrection in the south, the king appointed a Moslem general, Sonthi Boonyaratglin, as head of the army. Boonyaratglin was already a senior army general, and was considered a likely candidate for the job. Boonyaratglin wants to use a less violent approach in dealing with the Moslem separatists in the south.
