The government is increasingly concerned that Islamic terrorist groups are using southern Thailand for hideouts and staging areas. Local Moslems can be relied on to keep quiet, and criminal gangs provide muscle, for a price, to keep the terrorists off the police radar.
February 6, 2006: Three security personnel were killed in the south, all shot from behind.
February 5, 2006: A terrorist bomb went off in a restaurant in the south, killing one and wounding 26. Two teenagers were seen parking a motorcycle, which contained the bomb, in front of the restaurant.
