 Although the government has lost it's key Elephant Pass base at the entrance to the Jaffna peninsula, it still holds most of the thousand square mile Jaffna peninsula despite LTTE efforts to recapture their former base area. The government has set up new defense lines south of Elephant Pass and vows to retake the area. Meanwhile, the LTTE offensive has put Norwegian peace talk efforts on the back burner.
