mso-bidi-language: AR-SA"> The government began a new offensive and captured the town of Chavakachcheri, which the rebels used as a starting point for their earlier attack on Elephant Pass (which forms the base of the Jaffna peninsula and its connection to the mainland. Some thirty died during the three hour battle for the town. Air force warplanes destroyed fourteen rebel bunkers close to Jaffna town.
