  After a successful offensive in Jaffna, soldiers dug in to defend against rebel counter attacks. Army losses were six dead and over three dozen wounded. Rebels losses were two to three times higher. 

November 19, 2000;  In Jaffna, the army advanced two kilometers and captured the town of Maduvil South from rebel defenders. The battle lasted some five hours. The troops were backed by warplanes and artillery.
