Sri Lanka: Rebels Reel, and Threaten More Suicide Attacks

Archives

December6, 2006: Heavy fighting continued up north, as LTTE gunmen tried, without success, to push the army away from LTTE base areas. The LTTE appears to be in disarray, with communications problems and an increasing number of deserters. Fighting also grew more intense in the east, where the army is advancing, and a dissident LTTE faction adds to LTTE problems. At least fifteen rebels were killed in the east over the last 24 hours, while two Moslem men were murdered by LTTE terrorists (trying to chase the Moslems from "Tamil territory.")

December 4, 2006: In the north, LTTE mortars and artillery continued to shell army bases, but only infrequently. The LTTE is apparently short of shells because of the increasingly effective navy patrols.

December 2, 2006: In response to yesterdays suicide bombing, the government has revived some tough anti-terror laws. This is also in response to LTTE threats of starting attacks against Sinhalese civilians in general. The LTTE is losing this new round of the civil war, and terrorism is their ultimate weapon.

December 1, 2006: A suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a convoy transporting the defense minister. Two bodyguards, and the bomber, were killed and eleven people wounded. Police traced ownership of the bombers vehicle, and made two arrests. Meanwhile, up north, dozens of troops and rebels were killed and wounded as fighting flared up.
